This month, Georgian College began counting educator participation in the Ontario Extend East program towards their Teaching Practice Credentials (TPC), or recertification. The TPC recognizes Georgian faculty for their participation in professional learning opportunities. Faculty can re-certify on a yearly basis. TPC and recertification recipients are recognized and honoured at annual Focus on Teaching Conference (organized by the college’s Centre for Teaching and Learning).

Extend East is the second organized cohort of the Ontario Extend program, a professional development initiative that is grounded in the belief that the impact on learning should be the primary motivator for creating technology-enabled and online learning experiences. Extend aims to empower educators to explore a range of emerging technologies and pedagogical practices for effective online and technology-enabled teaching and learning.

The framework for the Extend resources is grounded in the model of the Anatomy of the 21st Century Educator as described by Simon Bates (2014) and supported by six modules. In a cohort module like Extend East, one module is explored each week for the six weeks of the program. While work in the modules is largely self-directed, participants in the Georgian College TPC stream who complete a certain amount of Extend module activities and Extend daily activities will receive up to 4 TPC credits. Georgian College is also considering additional TPC credits for completing the Extend badges.

Georgian has a strong contingent participating in the Extend East cohort, many of whom are committed to pursuing the full experience of hosting their own domain and completing the badges.

The next segment of the Ontario Extend program is Extend West, which kicks off this May 8th at Lambton College.
